English

English comes in four flavours: English the language, English the people who live in England, English the academic subject and English the adjective used to describe things for which “quaint” would be too mild.

English the language

Not to be confused with American “English”, English is a fine tongue descended from proto Indo-European. It now comprises over 800,000 words, most of which are now deprecated due to being old, obscure or useless.

English words include ‘then’, ‘several’, ‘torpedo’, ‘slack’ and ‘exalt’.

English the academic subject

English is studied by native speakers and non-native speakers alike.
