Kilometre

One kilometre or km is one thousand times a metre, and is thus defined as the distance travelled by light in a vacuum in 1/299,792.458 of a second.

It is not a base unit in SI, but it is one thousand times the metre, and thus involves the prefix kilo.

It is used by the French to give them the illusion that they are driving faster than they really are.
