Mars

Mars is the name given to a planet, a god, a tune and a type of chocolate bar.

The planet

Mars the planet is small, red and a couple of hundred million miles away at the best of times.

It is a giant ball of rust, rocks and ice, with a very thin, mostly-CO2 atmosphere.

Aliens

In H. G. Wells’ War of the Worlds, and many novels since, Mars has been assumed to be the home of alien life forms, many of them bent on conquest of Earth. In actual fact, the best we’ve found is what looked like a tiny bacterium in a meteorite which actually wasn’t.

The god

Mars was the god of war in the Roman pantheon, oustripping Ares, the Greek version, with a selection of exciting new features and an entirely redesigned user interface.

The music

Mars, Bringer of War is a tune in Holst’s Planets suite.

The chocolate

Mars bars are an ubiquitous commodity, comprising a milk chocolate outer coating with a caramel and nougat centre.
