Piano

Piano is the Italian word for ‘quiet’. However, its more usual usage is as an abbreviation for piano-forte, a musical instrument which is anything but.

Pianos come in three main classifications: grand, not grand and electronic. Almost all share the common feature of a keyboard with black and white keys, but what comes below and/or behind it varies widely between classes.

Some have a set of pedals underneath which make various changes to the emitted noise.

In all cases they are controlled by an operator called a ‘pianist’ whose individual skill contributes to the type of sound that these devices make.

Types

Grand

A grand piano with lid open. Note the reflections of the noise-making strings in the unnecessarily-highly-polished underside of the lid.

Grand pianos, named after the French word grand, meaning big, are big. They are the shape of a giant, layed-down harp in a box, and the painist sits at the straight end of this box, from where he has easiest access to the keyboard.
